Well, not so much “math” as “ statistics and probability,” if you ever took a course on those. One of my favorite parts of Warhammer 40k is how it allows you to finally put to use some of those parts of your grade school education you thought you’d never use “in the real world.” Not that tabletop wargaming is “the real world,” but it is an application of some of those math skills you thought you’d never use. In this article, I’ll go over the basics of probability, and how understanding basic probability and statistics can help better predict outcomes and evaluate units, leading to smarter tactical decisions and better outcomes. While there’s no substitute for practice, there are a number of things players can learn to improve their play and army-building skills, many of which we’ve covered in our Start Competing series.
